Really interesting chapter! Well. They all have been so far. The bible is just so full of amazing things :)
This is the chapter where God gives Abram the famous promise that his offspring will be as uncountable as the stars.
I’m not a big Newsboys fan, but there’s a line in one of their songs on the Devotion album that goes:
Then I slept one night
In Abraham’s field
And dreamt there was no moon
The night he died
It’s just such a cool illustration of how exciting and amazing this promise would have been to Abram, and indeed how exciting it is to all of us to know that as the church is the new testament counterpart of Israel, we can expect such numerous spiritual offspring! Here’s a video of the Newsboys song, followed by my second main thought on this chapter:
The second cool thing in Genesis 15 is something God said to Abram about the future of his descendants that I hadn’t noticed before (is it called a prophecy if God says it directly to someone without using a prophet?)
Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.
This of course lines up with how the Israelites actually got to plunder the Egyptians as they left with Moses (a detail left out of most Sunday School tellings). It’s amazing just how many details of things are foretold in the bible!
