Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, I’ve just been lazy :/ Terrible, I know. But here we go, Genesis 16…
The story of how Abram bore a son by his wife’s slave.
Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.
That’s pretty much how it happened in those days. I’m sure they had some ritual or ceremonial wedding procedures, but the main point was that if you slept with a woman, she’s now your wife. So you can see why adultery was a big deal. If sleeping with someone makes them your spouse, you can’t sleep with someone else’s spouse, that would be sharing and would be really creepy.
Anyway, moving right along. So the plan worked, Hagar bore Abram a son. But it wasn’t ideal. God said about this son:
He will be a wild donkey of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward[b] all his brothers.”
Being patient is important when it comes to doing God’s will. Abram got impatient. God had promised him descendants numerous as the stars! Maybe it’s easy to call Abram a fool for rushing ahead and not trusting God to fulfill that plan in the proper way in His good timing, but we’ve all been there. Maybe not with the baby making, but with being impatient with God. We need to be patient, or the plan might still happen, but it won’t be God’s perfect plan. Abram had a son, but not the promised son. He had a son who would make enemies easily.
