Top 5 Relient K Songs

Relient K are a great band, talented at both the hilarious and the thought-provoking. So I thought I’d list my favourite five songs of theirs here, for you to inspect if you so wish :)

I Celebrate the Day

This video extends the intro a bit beyond the original recording, but nonetheless, it’s probably the most contextual Christmas song written in many years. I say contextual cause it looks at the entire purpose for which Jesus came, and not just the cute baby side of things. “I celebrate the day that You were born to die so I could one day pray for You to save my life.”

Faking My Own Suicide

The sheer hilarity of the idea of faking one’s own suicide to coax love out of another makes this song a winner! If you ignore how incredibly manipulative it’d be, it’s really cute :)

For the Moments I Feel Faint

I like this song simply cause of the line “Never underestimate my Jesus”. How often do we act as if our problems are too big for God? What a ridiculous concept!!! Nothing is too hard or big for God :)

My Girl’s Ex-Boyfriend

I love the insensitivity and rejoicing of this video. Being so happy about having a girlfriend and completely rubbing it in her ex’s face :P Hilarious!

Deathbed

Not a short song, but a fantastic song about grace and how God can enter your life no matter what your life has consisted of up till this point. Some of the lyrics aren’t transcribed accurately, but it’s a nicely done video. And there’s a vocal cameo by Jon Foreman from Switchfoot at the end, so listen for that. I’m so used to listening to both bands that I didn’t even notice it the first time I heard this song.

  1. I didn’t know that, I like Fireflies even more now!

I would’ve felt guilty if I didn’t include Deathbed. I think it’s an achievement to make an eleven minute song that doesn’t feel that long, which is more than I can say for some Pink Floyd songs, though they were amazing too :)

  2. Heh. I do like Relient K. Good selection, mate, although for some reason I wasn’t that crazy on the last song- although the inclusion of Jon Foreman was awesome. I think collaboration between musicians = win. Like Matt Thiessen does some of the backing vocals for Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’- didja know?

Anyway. ‘I celebrate the day’ is _wonderful_. It’s been stuck in my head since before Christmas.
