I mentioned in the first post in this series that this whole essentials idea was inspired by a news article I read about forgiveness (as well as my own preference to simplify things). I recommend you click through on the link and read that article before reading on here.
The stories in that article are very dramatic. Most of us hopefully won’t have to deal with a stupid driver killing a member of our family. But yet we still need to forgive people. Here’s my reasons why I think forgiveness is important. Please add your own :)
- It’s amazing how powerful grudges and hate are. They cause people to do things for no rational reason. To treat people in ways that they wouldn’t under normal circumstances. The long and short of it is that if you don’t forgive people, you end up looking pretty unreasonable and a bit of a loser sooner or later.
- As I said in a recent post about the Lord’s Prayer, God wants His kids to forgive each other, just as your parents taught you to apologise and forgive each other when you were kids. If you can remember back to your childhood, it always brought finality to the matter and signaled to everyone involved that it’s time to move on.
- Continuing the Lord’s Prayer theme, we are asking God to forgive us as we forgive others. This means that a) we need to forgive others, but also b) when we forgive others we increase our understanding of God’s grace. And as God’s grace is so huge we can never fully understand it, that’s a pretty powerful understanding to have!
So those are three of my reasons why forgiveness is awesome and important. What are yours?
