Boy

I went to see Boy yesterday. Good kiwi film! New Zealand really does make some fantastic movies. The story managed to handle sitting on the line between being realistic yet at times being quite unrealistic but always feeling believable.

It was good to see the dude from the Tourism Paeroa ads in the cast, and good to hear some awesome kiwi music in the soundtrack. The movie’s possibly so kiwi that it wouldn’t do well in other markets cause they wouldn’t really understand it. But that makes it all the more hilarious here in NZ! The story was original, yet easy to relate to. Surely everyone can see a bit of Boy in themselves. The dance at the end was also hilarious!

I don’t know what else to say, don’t wanna give the plot away. You should definitely go see it!!!

Oh and there are some great references to NZ popular culture including Flight of the Conchords – “You’re not a man” “technically I am!” and a Billy T. James clip on the TV in their house.

Alice in Wonderland, 3D

Got to see the movie this evening, courtesy of my family.

Certainly it was better than the reviews I have read. Tim Burton isn’t my favourite directory, I don’t think it’s one of my favourite movies. I’m not a big quirky movie person really. But it was good. The 3Dness was cool, and used well. Not gimmicky, but still fun.

The plot was… well I can’t remember the book. But maybe that’s for the better. Cause I enjoyed the twists and turns. I enjoyed the characters developing throughout the movie. Well Alice in particular I guess, the other characters were more or less the same throughout. Slightly creepy and detached, but also friendly. But yes. I found the movie to be pretty original, well thought out. Quirky and enjoyable. Not my thing, but surprisingly cute even though it was quirky and often dark in atmosphere.

It was good to see some familiar faces, or at least hear some familiar voices. There’s the obvious ones like Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway. But there was also the guy who plays George McFly in the Back to the Future movies, can’t remember his name. I really liked how Alice was portrayed.

Anyway, that’s some disjointed thoughts. Good movie worth seeing at the cinema :) Oh and the dance at the end rocked :)

Te Papa is Awesome

I was thinking the other day, and I’ve decided to spare a moment to promote our national museum. Though I live in Wellington, I hardly go there, and to be honest, I think I should! In the past 18 months, I’ve randomly wandered into Te Papa twice, and both times proved to be extremely worthwhile! Continue reading
